Today we take for granted that Disney cartoons look like any other cute, family-friendly cartoon we’ve ever seen, but if you look back far enough you start to realize that someone had to actually come up with and commit to that idea before we could experience it. Walt Disney’s best and most successful vehicle for it was Mickey Mouse.
Oh, Disney had his fair share of weird and sometimes creepy cartoons as well, even after creating Mickey Mouse, but he was just a bit more committed to building a rational story and creating a self-consistent style than a lot of other animators at the time. Each of his characters was memorable and had a thought-out storytelling dynamic behind them and the types of gags they could get into, with Donald, Goofy, and Mickey all having distinct flavors of comedy.
Thus, from 1928 onward Disney continued to produce cartoons that became recognizable and successful. More than that, like George Lucas many decades later, Walt Disney was a technical visionary who constantly worked to improve his craft and the technology behind it. His studio’s work gradually improved in quality and consistency, and with that so did the recognition of both the studio and his characters.
All of that culminated in 1937. Walt Disney Studios by that point was already pretty much worldwide famous, but it was during this year that they introduced the big one.
