Forest were founded in 1865 by a group of players involved in shinney – a sport similar to hockey – following a meeting in which they decided to play football instead.

Their red and white club colours were established when the founders resolved to buy 12 tasselled caps in the colour of ‘Garibaldi Red’ – taken from the leader of the popular Italian ‘Redshirts’ freedom fighters in England at the time.

Until they moved to their beloved City Ground home in 1898, Nottingham Forest Football Club played at a variety of stadiums including Trent Bridge, now better known as a cricket ground. They were also pioneers in 1874 when they became the first team to play with shin guards.

The season before their move to a permanent stadium had been a seismic one. Six years after becoming league members, Forest won the FA Cup for the first time by beating Derby County in front of 62,000 supporters at Crystal Palace, enjoying an underdog 3-1 victory over opponents who had thrashed them 5-0 less than a week earlier.
